University of Chicago course

Hawks vs. Curtiz

This Spring, Adam and Matty are excited to teach a Point of View course at The University of Chicago's Graham School of General Studies.

WHO
Come one, come all. You do not have to be a student at the University of Chicago.

WHAT
The Auteur and the Hack—Hawks vs. Curtiz

WHEN
4/2/2008 - 6/4/2008
Wednesday 6:00 PM - 9:30 PM

DESCRIPTION
"Casablanca" is widely considered a masterpiece, yet the film’s director, Michael Curtiz, is commonly regarded as a highly skilled studio “hack.” In contrast, Curtiz contemporary Howard Hawks has been crowned an auteur by adoring critics and scholars despite working predominantly within the same popular genres as Curtiz. What separates a “great” filmmaker from simply a “good” one? What distinguishes a film as “art” instead of mere “entertainment”? We will explore these questions by examining the films of these two Hollywood heavyweights. Screenings include: "His Girl Friday," "Rio Bravo," "To Have and Have Not," and "Mildred Pierce."

TO REGISTER
