#898: Glass Onion / Wakanda Forever / She Said / Nanny
For the second installment in his "Knives Out" series, Rian Johnson leaves the family squabbling behind for a trip to a luxury island where murder most foul befalls the filthy rich. GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY shows Johnson hasn't lost his ability to pair social commentary with crackerjack entertainment. Unfortunately, director Ryan Coogler’s return to the “Black Panther” franchise is a less successful venture. While Coogler does right by the late Chadwick Boseman, his WAKANDA FOREVER is over-burdened by the demands of the MCU and let down by uninspiring and occasionally indecipherable effects work. Also on the show, Golden Brick nominations for Nikyatu Jusu's Sundance-winning NANNY and David Siev's BAD AXE, a documentary about the director's immigrant family's life in small-town Michigan. Plus thoughts on Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan in SHE SAID and the new doc LOVE, CHARLIE: THE RISE AND FALL OF CHARLIE TROTTER.
